Started by the late Father Russ Maue and Wanda Wuest, the Christmas Giving Tree is now coordinated by Carla Fiehrer to help those in need. The tags for the tree are Christmas cards donated by parishioners and friends. Each tag represents a child or an adult. The names of those in need are received from local service agencies. Names are kept confidential. Some tags request a donation to St. Peter in Chains's for their participation with the Community Meal Center. The tree is put up on the first Sunday of Advent and tags are replenished after each Mass. The gifts are sorted, bagged and delivered a week before Christmas. Please call Carla Fiehrer, 863-3907, for more information.
Formulated in 1835, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a Parish supported charity serving the less fortunate in our community. Our St. Peter’s parish conference uses donations from monthly Parish collections and other church organizations to relieve some of the basic living needs for local struggling neighbors/families. No work of charity is foreign to the Society. It includes any form of help that alleviates suffering or deprivation and promotes human dignity and personal integrity in all their dimensions.
Through donations, our parish Vincentians helps our local neighbors with food, clothing, furniture and shelter. We assist with Rent, Utilities and with our visits to nursing homes, hospitals and shut-ins, we simply help by listening. The group serves with a sense of humility and justice, and any financial assistance is always temporary and measured depending on the situation. We seek Christ in the faces of those we serve and pray for the needy among us. Our parish conference ministers to the needs of our surrounding neighbors; Regardless creed, ethnic or social background, health, gender or political opinions.
The mission of our Society's members is to follow Christ through service to those in need and so bear witness to His compassionate and liberating love. Members show their commitment through person-to-person contact. Vincentians serve in hope and to strive to seek out and find those in need. Seek out and find the forgotten, the victims of exclusion or adversity. ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
